Riddler

Riddler

The Riddle was created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang in Detective Comics #140 in 1948. He wore a tight green spandex outfit that later changed into a green suit and bowler hat. After the movie, Batman Forever, The Riddler was given a question mark cane that he used as a weapon. The Riddler always tried to baffle the Dynamic Duo with series of riddles and puzzles, something this villain is obsessed with. After Paul Dini took over Detective Comics, The Riddler became a character that had no side. There were times where he would help Batman and times that he would help the villains. In many of the later Riddler appearances, such as the Batman television show and the movie Batman Forever, Riddler was the criminal dead set on defeating The Bat. In the television show Gotham, The Riddler is works in the forensic lab of GCPD, helping to catch the bad guys, but it’s obvious that there’s something a little off about him as far as his innocence goes. In the Batman video games, The Riddler isn’t really on anyone’s side. He just leaves a lot of Riddle trophies around for Batman to find and won’t even attempt to take out the Bat until they are all collected and Batman “proves he’s worthy” to fight.

Riddler back-story: Edward Nashton was born in a town called Waterbury. Even as a young boy he struggles to find the answer to any and every question that popped into his head. This often led him to ask adults and peers tricky and annoying questions. He didn’t have any friends and really wanted to be popular. When there was puzzle contest put on by the school, Edward entered and practiced extremely hard because he thought that winning the contest would gain him attention. He did win and did get attention, but not from the people he wanted it from. Edward was targeted by bullies. The contest awarded Edward with a book of puzzles that started his obsession. When he grew up and starting working an everyday boring job he often found entertainment through crime. Crime eventually consumed his life, and Edward Nashton became Edward Nygma, aka The Riddler.
